“Tiger” village

In the hills above Tire, just inland from the Aegean coast and Selçuk, sits the pretty little village of Kaplan. Despite its weird name (“Tiger”), the village is best known for a pair of peaceful restaurants with spectacular views back over the town.

The Kaplan Dağ Restaurant (Tel: 0232-512 6652) is festooned with gourds in an astonishing array of shapes and sizes. There could be few nicer places to lunch on a choice selection of mezes.

Transport info

Without your own car you will need to hire a taxi in Tire to come up here. Agree a price including waiting time or arrange a time for the driver to return.

On your way up you could also pause to admire the wonderful 15th-century Yavukluoğlu (Yoğurtluoğlu) Cami in the outskirts of Tire which was restored in the early 2000s. Unusually, the complex surrounding the mosque includes an observatory.
