“Sun Rising”
On the northern shore of the Bodrum Peninsula between Yalıkavak and Göltürkbükü, Gündoğan is a sizeable and relatively upmarket settlement with a pleasant small beach where most swimming is done from wooden decks jutting out into the water.
It’s one of those places where there’s not a great deal to do bar lie in the sun, swim, indulge in a variety of watersports, then adjourn to a cafe to eat, although there are also boat trips out round the bay which take you to Küçük Tavşan Adası (Little Rabbit Island), also known as Apostle Island after its ruined church. They also allow plenty of time for swimming.
A couple of huge rocks loom above the bus station. One has a church called the 52 Merdiven Kilise (52 Steps Church) built against it although on the day I visited it was so hot that I baulked at the thought of climbing up to investigate.
Sleeping
This is big package-holiday territory with the vast all-inclusive Baia Beach Hotel (Tel: 0252-387 9293) in pride of place on the waterfront. Of the smaller hotels the Sunfish (Tel: 0252-387 8037) looked the most promising.
Transport info
There are regular buses to Gündoğan from Bodrum‘s town-centre otogar and a more limited service from Gümüşlük and Yalıkavak that continues on to Göltürkbükü.
