verde1Right at the heart of Antalya's historic Kaleiçi neighbourhood, the inviting Villa Verde hotel has a great location beside the Kesik Minare with rooms at the front facing straight onto the ruins. Although there are a growing number of pubs nearby the specific alley between the hotel and the ruins remains extremely quiet for the time being.

A big open-fronted lobby reception area is piled high with magazines and books about the area - the actual desk at which the checking in is done is tiny in comparison. The Turkish-Japanese owners make sure everyone gets a warm welcome.

My first-floor bedroom was relatively spacious with a big, comfy bed and good (essential) air-con. The furnishings were perhaps a little dour by modern standards but I had no complaints. The minibar was unstocked rather surprisingly but the TV managed to offer AlJazeera. The view was simply splendid. verde2

Unusually, I was asked what time I'd like breakfast with last serving at the late hour of 11am. The actual breakfast was a real feast - it's worth reining in on dinner the night before to be sure to be able to do it justice. It's served in the big ground-floor reception area with the ruins just a stone's throw away.

Like some other hotels in Kaleiçi, the Villa Verde actually has bits of Roman Antalya running through it, this time in the shape of an exposed pipeline.

verde3Kesik MinareThumbs up: Location could hardly be bettered especially if you like ruins

Thumbs down: Lots of stairs so not great for the less mobile
