senlerRight in the centre of Hakkari, the Şenler Hotel is a welcoming three-star, refurbished in 2012 to modern standards. There are occasional flashes of kitsch but on the whole the decor is fairly stylish.

I spent my first night here in a suite because everything else was full. Obviously this was very comfortable although I found the glowing blue lights in the sitting area difficult to deal with as they were not bright enough to read by. This sitting area, however, comes with a fridge, tea-making facilities, a three-piece suite and a wall-mounted TV (no BBC or AlJazeera sadly).

The bedroom was extremely comfortable with a double bed and lots of cupboard space as well as a dressing-table that doubled as a perfect work surface. When I moved to a standard room I found it to be more or less the same, just without the attached sitting area.

The first floor features a pleasant dining room where a good breakfast is served. Beside it is a very comfortable lounge area where tea is served and conversation flourishes. In the evening a simple dinner is served from 7-8pm.

The best thing about this hotel is that it seems to act as a meeting point for anyone who's doing anything interesting in the area, a place to come to make new friends.

Thumbs up: Smart, comfortable hotel in unexpected location

Thumbs down: Few steps up to entrance, no air con (but Hakkari sufficiently high in the mountains that probably not essential)
