Just a couple of blocks inland from the seafront at İskenderun, the Grand Akçalı Hotel is a smart business class place to stay handy for the shops, banks and restaurants.

The lobby has an Ottomanesque feel to it but the bedrooms are much more restrained - stlyishly modern without being over the top. Mine (which they apologised profusely for being the smalles) had a comfortable double bed looking straight at a wall-mounted TV with some English programming. I suppose there wasn't a lot of space to walk around the bed but there was a long desk to one side with a stocked mini-bar. Both the air-con and the wifi worked very well.

The bathroom was similarly smart with a long walk-in shower and lots of toiletries.

Breakfast is served in a top-floor dining room with views over the roofs of İskenderun. There's a great choice of hot and cold items.

The hotel also has a sauna, hamam and fitness room.

Immediately beside the hotel is İskenderun's Coffee Alley with lots of tables to sit out and chat or play backgammon with the locals.

Thumbs up: Attractive rooms in a great downtown location; excellent breakfasts

Thumbs down: A few steps up the entrance might be a problem for some visitors
