eylul1On the western side of Kızkalesi opposite the Carrefour supermarket, the Hotel Eylül looks pretty swish from the outside. Inside, however, it's a little on the old-fashioned side, right down to the business of selling its rooms on a half-board basis backed up by signs forbidding anyone to bring in food or drink from outside.

That said, it has a couple of big pluses. The first is the pool at the back if you're the sort of person who prefers to look at the sea, then swim in an enclosed space.

The second is that the bedrooms are large and mostly have balconies. The hotel is not right on the seafront but some have partial sea and castle views. Those at the front are likely to be blighted by noise from the busy main road.

The decor struck me as very old-fashioned and my room suffered from a couple of flaws, namely an almost unusably weak wifi signal and no English language programming on the TV. There was a fridge but it was unstocked despite the ban on bringing drinks in from outside. The balcony had a couple of handy rails for hanging washing on.eylul3

The bathroom was small but perfectly functional and well stocked with toiletries.

I visited off-season when breakfast was served. I assume it would be open-buffet in the summer. It's served outdoors by the pool which is very pleasant. Dinner is served in a large ground-floor dining room which looked somewhat institutional.

Thumbs up: Nice pool, big rooms

Thumbs down: Weak wifi, old-fashioned decor
