DEMİRDAĞ HOTEL, MİDYAT

estel1Lovely though old Eski Midyat is, and appealing as the idea of staying there is, I have to admit that after a couple of days at the Konukevi I moved to the modern Estel area to stay at the Hotel Demirdağ, a small business-style hotel with no great aesthetic appeal but where I was guaranteed sanctuary from the children who were a perpetual hassle when I stepped out of the hotel in the old part of town.

I ended up staying a whole week at the Demirdağ which offered a good enough room with air-con and a decent breakfast in the top-floor dining room as well as a welcome that was warm enough without being overwhelming.

Although it's more than a km's walk to the old town a city bus plies up and down at frequent intervals all day so I never found that a problem. The hotel was also just round the corner from the older part of Estel with its lovely houses and interesting Cultural Centre.

Thumbs up: Clean, comfortable and reasonably priced

Thumbs down: Some people won't want to stay in a new building
