cakmakafyonIt's hard to know quite what to say about this hotel which is right in the centre of Afyon within easy walking distance of all the main sights.

On taste grounds it needs to be condemned for the fake marble statues of Greek gods and goddesses jutting out from the corner of the building, and it's hard to escape the feeling that it has seen better days and is need of refurbishment.

On the other hand I arrived planning to stay for two nights and ended up staying six so they must be doing something right. One thing is for sure - it may call itself a four-star hotel but only because of its hamam and pool. Otherwise its amenities are only of normal three-star business quality.

Bedrooms are reasonably sized and comfortable provided you make sure to get one of those on the outside of the building and not one of those overlooking the atrium which, while quiet, are cramped and devoid of natural light. The best rooms overlook the castle but are on the noisier side of the building.

Rooms come with LCD TVs but with no foreign-language channels. Minibars have a limited stock (no alcohol) but the fridges are not turned on. Bathrooms are smallish and darkish but have proper tubs. The choice of toiletries suggests cost-cutting. cakmak2

The top-floor restaurant offers an excellent choice of breakfast items and the outdoor terrace area looks straight onto the castle. There's an open-buffet dinner menu here every night between 7.30 and 9.30 pm. Parties are catered on the second floor but live music is usually over not long after midnight.

There's a small pool and a lovely tiled hamam in the basement. But since my last visit the water seemed to have been reduced to tepid and the nice metal hamam bowls had been replaced with nasty plastic. Cost-cutting again?

Thumbs up: Great location, decent breakfasts, friendly service

Thumbs down: Very dowdy, dated lobby. Evidence of cost-cutting
