HABERLİ (BSORİNO, BETH SBİRİNO, BASİBRİN)

400 DSC03938

Southeast of Midyat in the Tur Abdin, the large and attractive village of Haberli once boasted no less than 25 churches and was famous for schools which produced a sequence of bishops, priests and scholars.

Today the most impressive building is the Syrian Orthdox (Suryani) Church of Mor Dodo, its courtyard so heavily fortifed that it resembles a castle. An inscription dates it back to 609 although it was restored very recently.

The courtyard contains a fine beth slutho,  an outdoor praying area to be used in summer, with an eighth-century cross carved into its apse.

Sleeping

There is nowhere to stay in the village. The best choices nearby are in Midyat.

Transport info

If you don't have your own car you will need to negotiate a fixed fare with a taxi driver in Midyat to get here. It's easy to combine a visit with one to Sarıköy, just a few km away, and to Mor Gabriel on the way back to Midyat.
