GÜZELSU

Other names: Ehwo, Habab, Hbob

The small village of Güzelsu on the south side of the Tur Abdin between Midyat and Nusaybin has been partly reinhabited by Suryanis returning from Germany. It is dominated by the restored church of Sts Sergius and Bacchus that looks rather like a fortress from the outside with its sturdy square corner tower. Although it may date back in origin to the seventh century it was badly damaged in the 1920s and has been extensively rebuilt although some traces of the original Byzantine decoration survive in the apse.

On the outskirts of the village stands the rebuilt monastery of Mor Eliyo.

At one time there were roughly 1000 households here. Now there are only 10.

Transport info

There are no dolmuses to get to Güzelsu. If you hire a taxi in Midyat or Nusaybin you should try to visit some of the other churches and monasteries in the area such as Mor Malke or Mor Yakup on the same trip.
